Alicia, a young Argentine girl, possesses an innate love for horse and the game of polo. Alicia's mother tries to stop her intrigue for polo by telling her about the miserable life a polo player's wide leads. She ignores her mothers warnings, however, and fosters her affinity for polo players. Years later, a grown-up Alicia finds love with Alejo, a talented polo player who completes her fairytale aspirations. While attending a polo match Alicia quickly learns that marriage to a polo player means she will never be her husbands only love because she must share his affections with his horse. The other wives can hardly be bothered with the match in which their husbands play because their marriages have become stagnant, and they tease Alicia for her naivity. When Alejo is unreceptive to her plea for company, Alicia realizes she has become a 'Polo Widow' fulfilling the warnings of her mother. Forced to compete against the animal she once adored, the horse becomes Alicia's enemy in the battle for Alejo's time and attention. Alicia conceals herself in order to observe her husband lavishing his attention on his horse, and notices the dedication with which he unwraps the horses legs after a match. Determined to reject the stereotype and win Alejo's undivided attention, Alicia devises a plan using her love of horses and the traditions of polo to entice him.
